Hon. Momodou Charreh Gibba, Councillor for Gunjur Ward stands as one of the most influential local government leaders in The Gambia’s West Coast Region. Serving as Councillor for Gunjur Ward under the Brikama Area Council (BAC), he has earned widespread recognition for his advocacy in sustainable development, democratic governance, and grassroots empowerment - both nationally and on the global stage.



His journey reflects a powerful combination of community-rooted upbringing, sporting excellence, administrative experience, continuous learning, and dedicated public service.

Hon. Gibba began his educational journey at Gunjur Primary School, where he developed a strong sense of discipline and community identity. He later attended Armitage High School, one of The Gambia’s most prestigious institutions, where his academic and leadership qualities further took shape.


Alongside his education, he distinguished himself as one of the finest midfield players in Gunjur and across the West Coast Region. Known for his vision, composure, and leadership on the pitch, he played for Pan/Gibbas FC and the Gunjur Town Team. His football career earned him admiration locally and contributed significantly to shaping his teamwork, discipline, and leadership qualities.


𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐀𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩


Following his playing career, Hon. Gibba continued his involvement in community development through sports by serving as a sports administrator for the Gunjur Sports Committee, Kombo South District Sports Committee, West Coast Regiona FA and the Super Nawettaan Committee. In this role, he contributed to the organisation and development of local football, supporting youth engagement and community cohesion through sport.

His experience in sports administration strengthened his leadership, coordination, and conflict-resolution skills, while deepening his connection with grassroots structures—preparing him for broader responsibilities in public service.

Driven by a desire to serve his community, Hon. Gibba transitioned into politics and was elected Ward Councillor for Gunjur. In this role, he has consistently demonstrated effective leadership and responsiveness to his constituents.


Understanding the demands of modern governance, he has pursued further education, earning National Doploma, Higher National Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Diplomacy which enhanced his understanding of governance, administration, and community development. His commitment to continuous learning underscores his belief that strong leadership must evolve with changing societal needs.


In 2022, his work was reaffirmed through his endorsement by the UDP Gunjur Ward faction, reflecting sustained trust and confidence in his leadership.

Hon. Gibba represented The Gambia as part of its delegation to the UN-Habitat Global Summit in Nairobi, engaging with global policymakers on sustainable cities, climate resilience, and inclusive urban development.

• Strengthened local government capacity

• Increased investment in infrastructure

• Enhanced partnerships with grassroots authorities

He emphasised the need for empowered local leadership in rapidly urbanising regions like the West Coast Region.

In addition to his councillorship, Hon. Gibba serves as Secretary of the VDC/WDC Conflict Resolution Committee, where he plays a key role in mediating disputes and ensuring adherence to the Local Government Act. He is also the Chairman of the Establishment & Appointment Committee of BAC that oversees staff recruitment and related staff matters.


He has consistently defended the legal authority of councils and cautioned against misinformation that could undermine governance and public trust.
