UDP spokesperson welcomes challenge to Darboe, amid faction concerns
UDP spokesman,Almammy Taal, has conceded there is no law that bars challenges to party leader and Secretary General Ousainou Darboe as party goes to Congress.
Gunjuronline contacted the image maker of the biggest opposition party to confirm reports of a breakaway faction planning to upstage Ousainou Daboe at the Congress. He responded:
“There is only ONE faction in UDP. Any member of the party can contest for any position and it is for the members to vote for their choice”.
However, in a more extensive interview on Fatu Network earlier today, Almammy was asked if Darboe was going to keep his position as Secretary General.
“I haven’t heard. Also it’s not unusual that the current party leader becomes the face of the party. At congress you can have a black horse, surprise person who wants to challenge for any position, even for position of Secretary General. I, for one, my candidate is Ousainou Darboe and I’m going to vote for him when elections come.
I think the deputy party leader herself, after the last congress, also made her position known. I know there are people who are not as outspoken as myself, but we want to assure everyone it’s internal democracy and as members of the party you have every right to contest for every position as long as long as you are a delegate to the congress”,Taal explained .
