Gambia Football fraternity pays tribute to late Sulayman Sambou as Gunjur United FC game against Dutch Lions postponed in honour of the Coastal team's Founder and Manager.
As the sprawling coastal town of Gunjur comes to terms with the sudden passing of Sulayman Sambou, prayers, tributes and condolences continue to pour in for the popular football star, administrator, manager and health and social worker.
The former YSB/Sinindinto striker and founder and manager of Gunjur United FC died on Monday following a brief, but serious illness.
As a mark of respect for the man who gave so much to the community through sports and health care provision, Gambia Football Federation has cancelled Gunjur Utd’s match against Dutch Lions today.
The confirmation of the cancellation was contained in a message thus:
“ We received the above request from Gunjur Utd for the demise of founder and team manager of the team . This sad event took place May 6th.
After consultation, the OC hereby informed both team of the postponement of the above match. We are sorry for any inconvenience this decision may cause.
Praying for ALLAH to grant him jannah tul Fridawsi”
Furthermore, football teams up and down the country has been sending prayers and condolences to the family of late Sulayman Sambou, Gunjur United FC and the community as a whole.
“ Prayers go out to his family and the Gunjur United team and community and may the departed soul rest in peace 🙏🏾”, Medina United wrote.
In the same vein, HART FC wrote: “ Our thoughts and prayers to the deceased family and Gunjur United.”
“May his soul rest in perfect peace. Condolences to his family and Gunjur United.” - Kanifing East FC.

“Mr Sambou has contributed immensely to the development of football both in Gunjur and neighbouring villages and by extension the Gambia. His demise is a colossal loss to the entire footballing fraternity. May Allah help fill the vacuum he has left behind for Gunjur United and all others benefiting from his benevolence through sports.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”
For their part, Unique Global FC said: “May Allah grant him jannah, and all the departed souls. Condolence to his love ones and Gunjur United. a big lost indeed.

Sulayman Sambou was arguably one of the greatest footballers to hail from Gunjur playing for club, town and district during his incredible football career for YSB/Sibindinto, Gunjur, District and Divisional Teams. He was later to hang his boots and concentrated on his medical career though his health facility - Kundembo Clinic providing the community with critical health care services.
Through his passion for football and youth development, Sulay took up football administration with Gunjur Sports Committee as well as being one of the key founders, team manager and financial backer of Gunjur’s only GFF League Division team, Gunjur United. Through his experience as a player and administrator, he steered Gunjur United to the Gambia Football Federation Division Two League. He was board Chairman of Gunjur United FC until his demise on Monday, 6th May 2024.
