Fisheries PS suspended, as Golden Lead saga festers
By Sainey Darboe
Amid allegations of bribery after the publication of a phone call recording with Chinese businessmen in which he allegedly solicited bribery, fisheries permanent secretary Dr. Bamba Banja has been suspended pending conclusion of investigations.
Human rights and social justice activist, Madi Jobarteh revealed the development in his Facebook newsfeed.
“Welcome news of the suspension of PS Fisheries Dr. Banja for corruption. But further, Minister James Gomez & Golden Lead company should also be suspended pending the conclusion of investigations”, he disclosed.
Sidi Jammeh, Chairman Emeritus World Bank-IMF African Society observed:
“Just a tip of the Iceberg! Corruption permeates the entire Governmental system. Sad commentary but, according to pundits, very close to the Reality on the ground. Just as it was under the Patently Corrupt Gambian Despot, Yaya Jammeh-led 2nd Republic, there is widespread Corruption in the "New Gambia".
I hope and pray that the Punitive action against the PS Fisheries is a signal of GOTG's resolve and commitment to Fight Corruption, and that there will be No sacred cow/s when it comes to enforcement of the "stated" Anti-corruption policy, if this isolated action should be regarded as such, i.e. a turning point. To Officialdom: Work for country and people. Not for Self. Gambians expect and Deserve Nothing less”.
