Public debt and fiscal management emerge as the leading issues in online political discourse, while persistent electricity challenges and calls for faster transitional justice add to pressure on the incumbent government.
Public debt, persistent electricity supply challenges and demands for faster transitional justice have emerged as major themes in The Gambiaโs online political discourse, according to a new analysis by Narrative Control covering the seven days ending October 14, 2026.
The analysis suggests that economic concerns and opposition alliance-building are increasingly shaping political debate as the country approaches the December 5, 2026 elections.

According to the report shared with Gunjur Online, public debt and fiscal management accounted for the largest share of political conversation during the period, followed by electricity and energy supply, and transitional justice and accountability.
The findings provide a snapshot of the issues attracting attention in online political discussions. However, the report cautions that its indicators are not an opinion poll and should not be interpreted as a prediction of the election outcome.
Public debt tops political conversation
Public Debt and Fiscal Management accounted for 11 per cent of the conversation share recorded by Narrative Control, making it the leading issue in its analysis.
The report highlighted concerns over The Gambiaโs domestic debt, which it said had risen to D55.43 billion, placing public finances at the centre of political debate.
The growing attention to public debt comes amid broader questions about fiscal management, government spending and the economic pressures facing the country.

The analysis indicated that the issue contributed negatively to the incumbent governmentโs narrative during the reporting period.
However, the figures and their wider economic implications should be considered alongside official debt statistics and independent economic assessments.
Electricity supply remains a major public concern
Electricity and Energy Supply accounted for 10 per cent of political conversation, making it the second most prominent issue identified in the report.
Despite additional electricity generation capacity, the analysis said persistent power shortages and reliance on imported fuel continued to contribute to load shedding.
Electricity supply has remained a significant public concern, with interruptions affecting households, businesses and essential services.
The report identified energy challenges as one of the issues weighing on the incumbent administrationโs standing in online political discourse.
The findings underline the importance of electricity reliability, energy affordability and the governmentโs plans to address persistent supply problems as subjects of public debate ahead of the elections.
Transitional justice and accountability
Transitional Justice and Accountability accounted for nine per cent of the conversation share, ranking third among the leading issues identified in the analysis.
According to Narrative Control, victimsโ groups and opposition voices have increased pressure for faster implementation of recommendations arising from the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).
The report noted that, although progress had been recorded, calls for more decisive action on transitional justice continued to feature prominently in political discussions.

The implementation of TRRC recommendations remains an important matter for victims, their families and those seeking accountability for human rights violations under the former regime.
The pace of implementation and the governmentโs response to demands for justice are likely to remain subjects of public scrutiny.
Opposition alliance adds to political debate
The report also identified the formal signing of a grand opposition alliance as a development that contributed to increased attention around the challenger narrative.
Narrative Control recorded an Opposition Unity Index of 44.7, an indicator used in its analysis to assess the degree of opposition consolidation.
The report said opposition messaging had increasingly focused on the need for political change, with pledges to address corruption, reform the security sector and accelerate the implementation of TRRC recommendations.
It also highlighted the nationwide tour by the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) as part of the political activity contributing to the debate.
Meanwhile, President Adama Barrowโs Meet the People Tour featured prominently in the incumbent governmentโs messaging, with an emphasis on national unity and development progress.

The analysis said the tour generated a positive impact on the incumbent narrative, although this was offset by negative developments associated with other issues.
What the indicators show
Narrative Control reported an Incumbent Composite score of -2.04, down from -1.73 in the previous reporting period. The Challenger Composite rose to +2.28 from +2.15.
The report also recorded Net Incumbent Leverage (NIL) at -1.56, with its seven-day moving average at -1.48, below the 14-day moving average of -1.44.
The platform interprets these indicators as reflecting a challenging online narrative environment for the incumbent government during the reporting period.

However, the scores measure the platformโs assessment of political coverage and narrative impact; they do not establish public voting intentions or demonstrate how voters will behave on election day.
The analysis also relies on model-generated assessments of the reach, impact and momentum of political storylines. Its findings should therefore be read as a directional assessment of online discourse rather than a definitive measurement of public opinion.
Economic and governance issues likely to remain prominent
Looking ahead, Narrative Control expects public debt, the cost of living and electricity supply to remain important subjects in political discussions, alongside the activities of the incumbent and opposition leaders.
With the December 5 election approaching, the debate is likely to continue encompassing economic management, public service delivery, accountability and the competing political partiesโ proposals for the countryโs future.

For voters, these issues raise substantive questions about fiscal sustainability, reliable electricity, the implementation of transitional justice recommendations and the credibility of competing policy commitments.
Whether online discussion reflects wider public priorities cannot be established from the analysis alone. Independent polling, official economic data and direct engagement with voters would be needed to build a fuller picture.
