Work is steadily progressing on the all-important Gunjur Market Road, stretching from the Freetown area of the sprawling coastal settlement, through the busy market, and linking up with the Brikama Highway near the central cemetery.

This vital stretch has long served as one of the main arteries of the town, connecting communities, traders, transporters and residents. Its reconstruction marks a significant step forward for Gunjurโ€™s infrastructure development.

Many residents still remember when this road was first tarred some four to five decades ago โ€” and what Gunjur looked like in those days. The town has since expanded rapidly, and with that growth has come increased traffic, business activity, and population pressure. The current project, understood to be a concrete road, reflects the need for a more durable and long-lasting solution.

Once completed, the road is expected to open up trade and commerce even further, improve mobility, reduce dust during the dry season, and enhance overall socio-economic development along this important corridor.

However, as construction continues, we respectfully urge the relevant authorities and contractors not to overlook one critical component: an effective drainage system. Without proper drainage, there is a serious risk of flooding during the rainy season, particularly for residents and shop owners living and operating along the roadside.

Development must go hand in hand with sustainability. A well-built road with proper drainage will not only serve this generation but also protect homes, businesses, and livelihoods for many years to come.

Gunjur deserves infrastructure that is built to last.
