Breaking: Gunjur’s Dr Gibril Jassey dies

The death of Dr Gibril Jassey of Gunjur has been announced today.

Dr Jassey returned to Gunjur in the early 90s to set up a clinic in Gunjur following years of living abroad.

He was a community man playing football for the town before travelling in search of knowledge. He continued to offer his expertise in the community when he returned home.


Dr. Jassey was a trained teacher from Yundum College. In the mid 1970s he was awarded scholarship to study medicine in Russia with Dr. Alhagie Touray and Aki Bayo also from Gunjur. After qualifying as a Medical Doctor, he returned home before once again travelling with Dr. Alhagie Touray for further professional training. Dr Jassey worked in Nigeria for some time before finally returning to Gunjur ti set up Kombo Clinics with Dr. Olu Yusupha Sanyang from Brikama.


The two colleagues ran the Kombo Clinics until 2003 when he was appointed as the Chairman of Brikama Area Council. According to those who know him and are close to him, Dr. Ahmad Gibril Jassey was a great unifier and believes in his cultural heritage.

Dr Gibril Jassey’s death is a massive loss to the community of Gunjur and The Gambia at large. He will be laid to rest in his native Gunjur later today.
