Gambia Police have confirmed that officers in Sanyang have arrested five individuals in connection with the alleged abduction of the Alkalo of Berending, Abdoulie Sanyang.

According to a police statement issued on April 3, 2026, the arrests were made on April 1 as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.


The suspects have been identified as Alasana Touray, Yaya Touray, Lamin Touray, Sulayman Touray, and Morro Touray. Authorities confirmed that all five are currently in custody and assisting police with their inquiries.


The circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction remain under investigation, with police assuring the public that further updates will be provided as the case develops.


The latest development follows an earlier incident in which youths from Gunjur were reported to have seized the Berending Alkalo, following the beating and injury of Yaya Darboe from Gunjur by by some individuals from Berending.


Community leaders, including the Gunjur Alkalo, had since called for calm as authorities work to address the long-standing dispute in the area.
