Gunjur, The Gambia – In a decisive move to resolve the protracted land border dispute between Gunjur and Berending, the government task force mandated to mediate the conflict has commenced the long-awaited demarcation exercise.

The process, which officially began on 10th July, is expected to bring an end to years of tension between the Jammeh Kunda, Darboe Kunda and the Berending community over contested land boundaries.

It could be recalled that the dispute turned deadly in 2019 when Buba Jammeh of Gunjur was allegedly shot at point-blank range by Buba Drammeh of Berending in a dispute over farmland. The tragic incident claimed Jammeh’s life and left several others injured, sparking fears of wider communal violence. Only swift intervention by community elders and security forces prevented further bloodshed at the time.

Speaking on the significance of the exercise, a member of the government task force said the demarcation is a “critical step towards lasting peace” between the two neighbouring communities.

Local leaders from both sides have welcomed the process and expressed hope that it will finally “put to rest” the land dispute that has strained relations for decades.

The government has urged all residents to remain calm and cooperate with officials to ensure the successful completion of the demarcation process.
