The Alikalo of Gunjur, Dembo Darboe, has called for calm and restraint following the arrest of several individuals in connection with a recent incident involving youths from Gunjur.

According to reports, unidentified youths allegedly seized the Alikalo of Berending, prompting intervention from the Gambia Police Force, who have since arrested a number of suspects. The individuals, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, are currently being held at the Brusubi Police Station.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions stemming from a long-standing land dispute between families in Gunjur and Berending. It could be recalled that Yaya Darboe was recently attacked and injured at his farm by individuals from Berending, reportedly linked to the dispute involving the Jammeh, Darboe, and Jatta families of Gunjur and Sanyang Kunda of Berending.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Lands, Hamat Bah, held a stakeholders meeting in Gunjur on Tuesday, where he assured the community of the governmentโ€™s commitment to resolving the decades-long dispute. He later proceeded to Berending to engage stakeholders there in a similar meeting as part of efforts to de-escalate tensions and find a lasting solution.

Alikalo Dembo Darboe has urged residents to remain peaceful and allow authorities to handle the situation, emphasizing the importance of unity and stability.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue efforts to restore calm and address the underlying issues.
