USA based Gunjurian to sponsor three Awards in Gunjur ‘Nawettan’ Final

He has always been in the limelight in the social development activities of the community of Gunjur in Kombo South, West Coast Region, yet, he came up with another support for the youth in the sports sector, while refreshing memories of the late heroes.

Three Awards sponsor Pa Mambuna O. Bojang

Pa Mambuna Bojang, a Gunjurian based in the United States is set to sponsor three awards in the upcoming Gunjur ‘Nawettan’ league final.


The three awards include the best coach, the most outstanding player, and the man of the match. The awardees will receive a certificate and a token of D1,000 each.

The awards are all named after veteran footballers in Gunjur who are all late. The best coach award is named after Bekai O. Bojang – Best Coach for the league, the Most Outstanding Player after Foday Jabang, and the Man of the Match on the day of the final after Buba Keita.

Bekai O. Bojang

Bekai O. Bojang was a former footballer who played for and coached the Gunjur Town Team. He also played club football for Dabanani in Gunjur and Justice Lovers in Brikama.


Foday Jabang has been regarded as the most capped player in the history of Gunjur football. He played for the Gunjur Town Team, Young Dabanani Football Club of Gunjur, and Saraba United of Brikama. He also played for the Gambia Police Force.

Buba Keita, an iconic player who lost his life on the pitch in Gunjur in 1998 while playing for Argentina in their 'Nawettan' game against Tennis, played for Argentina in Gunjur, Justice Lovers of Brikama, and Jattas F.C of Basse. He also played for the Gunjur Town Team.

Explaining the reason for naming the awards after these veterans, Pa Mambuna Bojang said during championships are the best moment to remember the late heroes.

'They left indelible memories in the minds and hearts of the footballing fraternity in the West Coast Region and beyond.'

'We must always remember and make prayers for them, and there are no better times to do so than at championship games.' he said.

Pa Mambuna Bojang was a former footballer for Y.S.B. and the Gunjur Town Team now based in the U.S.A. He is an immense contributor to the social development of Gunjur. He renders support in the sports, education, and health sector among other community development initiatives. He also supports the individual education of many young people within the community.


The final between Power Dynamo F.C and Dabanani United is slated for 18th February 2023 in Gunjur at 4pm.
