The British High Commission in Banjul hosted a special reception on 24 June to honour Gambians who have studied in the United Kingdom through UK Government-sponsored programmes.

The event brought together alumni from the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship schemes, British Council-supported educational programmes, and members of the Gambia Armed Forces who have trained in the UK. The reception served as a celebration of the strong and diverse educational partnerships between the UK and The Gambia.
In particular, the evening marked the return of the 2023/2024 Chevening scholars, who recently completed their postgraduate studies at leading UK universities. Their achievements were recognised during the event, which celebrated not only academic success but also the shared commitment of both countries to nurturing future leaders.

Speaking at the event, British High Commissioner Her Excellency Harriet King congratulated the alumni on their accomplishments and highlighted the vital role education plays in national development. “These scholars represent the future of The Gambia,” she said. “Their knowledge, experiences, and global perspectives will help drive positive change across their communities and sectors.”
The reception also underscored the UK’s continued investment in people-to-people links and long-term collaboration through education. The British High Commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting more Gambians through opportunities like Chevening, the Commonwealth Scholarship programme, and British Council initiatives.

Alumni shared their personal experiences of studying in the UK and expressed gratitude for the opportunities provided. Many noted how the international exposure and academic training had strengthened their professional skills and broadened their understanding of global issues.
The event concluded with a strong message of continued partnership and the importance of education in building a more prosperous and inclusive future for both nations.
