In a significant step towards enhancing Gambia’s maritime security, the British Government has officially handed over two Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) to the Gambian Navy. The formal ceremony took place in Banjul, on Thursday, 26th June where British High Commissioner to The Gambia, Her Excellency Harriet King, and UK Defence Advisor Lieutenant Colonel Sigolene Hobson presented the vessels on behalf of His Majesty’s Government.

Receiving the boats on behalf of the Government of The Gambia were the Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant Colonel Mamat O. Cham and senior naval officials. The vessels are expected to play a critical role in supporting the Navy’s operations in safeguarding Gambian waters from a range of maritime threats.
The donation forms part of broader UK support aimed at strengthening The Gambia’s capacity to combat illegal fishing, irregular migration, drug smuggling, and other criminal activities at sea. As the Gambian Navy continues to expand its capabilities, the addition of these RHIBs marks a major boost to its operational readiness and mobility in coastal patrol and interdiction efforts.

“This donation is a testament to the close and growing partnership between the United Kingdom and The Gambia,” said High Commissioner King. “We remain committed to supporting The Gambia in promoting peace, security, and stability - both within its borders and across the wider region.”
The Defence Advisor, Lt Col Hobson, also highlighted the strategic importance of maritime security, noting that the vessels will contribute to long-term efforts to protect vital marine resources and strengthen rule of law at sea.

This latest initiative reflects the UK’s continued engagement in West Africa, working alongside regional partners to foster sustainable development, improve security infrastructure, and address transnational threats.
The donation was welcomed by Gambian defence officials, who praised the UK’s ongoing support and reaffirmed their commitment to using the new assets effectively in the service of national and regional security.
