The President of Gunjur United Football Club, Mr Sulayman Sambou has resigned with immediate effect according to a letter seen by Gunjur Online. The news of Mr Sambou’s resignation was received with shock by football fans in the sprawling coastal settlement with many considering this as a great loss not only to Gunjur United FC, but the football fraternity of Gunjur.
Sulayman Sambou has been president of Gunjur United FC for many years guiding the team close to a First Division promotion. He has been the driving force both on and off the pitch, using his personal finances, support from the Gunjur Sports Committee and private individual donors to ensure that the team succeeds. In his resignation letter addressed to Gunjur Sports Committee, Mr Sambou intimated that he has had to resign as President of Gunjur United FC due to “new developments and challenges” in his career which meant that he is unable to give the football club the attention it needed from the President. Sulayman Sambou is a health practitioner and runs a private clinic in Gunjur which serves Gunjur and the immediate surroundings. He concluded his resignation letter by wishing the incoming President all the very best of luck. His words: “While I wish the incoming president well, I pray that we continue to strive as a community to support the team in their quest for first division football.
Reacting to the news of Sulamyan Sambou’s resignation, Momodou Charreh Jibba a seasoned sports administrator and a local Councillor offered these: “ This letter is well written, although it is with deep shock and disbelief that we could part away with Sulayman Sambou at this crucial moment of rebuilding and preparing the team for the coming season. However, we thank him so much and we pray to Almighty to reward him and his staff abundantly for their selfless services to our community. Ala baraka baakeh”
Also expressing gratitude to the outgoing president, a player who goes by the alias, "Son of Joy" had this to say: “Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for all the support and motivation! You are so helpful to the community, kind, and generous with your time and energy. Thank you so much for being an excellent manager! Just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate you as our manager and friend. May God reward you for your efforts you did for the community. You have set and example and I think others will emulate you, thanks manager Sulayman Sambou”
Sulayman Sambou was a prolific striker playing club football for Young Soccer Brothers (YSB), later renamed Sibindinto FC. He was a regular player for Gunjur Town team representing the team at national competitions where he scored important goals to win matches for the team. He ventured into football management after retiring from active football, eventually becoming the President of Gunjur United FC.
