Gunjur Ward Women’s Wing Identifies Priority Projects for D1 Million Development Fund from Brikama Area Council
Gunjur, 8 April 2025
Following the disbursement of the annual D1 million Ward Development Fund from the Brikama Area Council (BAC), the Gunjur Ward Development Committee (WDC), through its Women’s Wing, has convened a consultative meeting to identify key community projects to be funded under the initiative.

The meeting, held on Sunday, 6th April 2025 highlighted pressing development needs within the ward, particularly those affecting women and vulnerable groups, and outlined a list of priority projects for consideration and approval by the wider WDC.
1. Provision of Affordable Drinking Water for Sengha Community
One of the top priorities identified is the urgent need for clean and affordable drinking water in Sengha, a remote settlement located behind Gunjur Jujuba near the mining area. Residents of Sengha face daily challenges accessing potable water, posing significant health and sanitation risks. The proposed project aims to install a sustainable water supply system to address this basic yet critical need.
2. Rehabilitation of Holland Garden Fence
The deteriorating condition of the fence surrounding the Holland Community Garden was also noted as a major concern. Women gardeners currently rely on makeshift barriers - sticks, old nets, and ropes - to prevent animals from destroying their crops. During major religious holidays like Koriteh, they are even forced to hire guards to protect the garden. Rehabilitation of the fence will not only enhance food security but also reduce financial burdens on the women who manage the space.
3. Establishment of Satellite Health Posts in Gunjur Freetown and Gunjur Santanba
Communities in Gunjur Freetown and Gunjur Santanba have submitted requests for local health posts to support maternal and child health. Currently, pregnant and nursing mothers travel long distances to access services at the Gunjur Health Centre. With the support of the Centre, the proposal involves constructing simple sheds or rooms where health personnel can visit regularly, thereby improving outreach and easing the burden on women in these areas.
4. Capacity Building and Health Sensitisation for Women
Recognising the importance of empowerment through knowledge, the Women’s Wing has also prioritised a series of capacity-building workshops. These trainings will focus on key issues such as women’s health, entrepreneurship, and effective marketing strategies. The initiative has received enthusiastic support from women across the ward, who expressed a strong desire to better understand and address the challenges they face.
The Gunjur Ward Development Committee applauded the Women’s Wing for its proactive role in community planning and reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive development. With the proposed projects now under review, the WDC aims to begin implementation as soon as possible to ensure that the D1 million fund makes a meaningful impact on the lives of residents.
The Women’s Wing remains a vital pillar of local development efforts, consistently advocating for practical, people-centered solutions that uplift the entire Gunjur Ward community.
