Gunjur, The Gambia – In a bold step toward empowering young women, the Barrow Kunda Kabilo Youth Association are officially the main sponsors of an initiative under the Great Mind’s Skills Centre in Gunjur: the Barrow Kunda Kabilo Youth Empowerment Project.

This impactful community project aims to uplift young women, especially those who have dropped out of school or experienced teenage pregnancy by equipping them with essential vocational and life skills that promote economic self-reliance and personal growth.
Skills for Self-Reliance and Economic Empowerment
The training focuses on practical, income-generating skills such as:
Sewing and tailoring
Tie & dye and batik
Beading and embroidery
Soap making
In addition to hands-on training, participants will benefit from mentorship in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and personal development workshops to boost confidence and leadership.
“This initiative is about giving girls the tools to build their futures with dignity and independence,” said a representative from the Great Mind’s Skills Centre. “Through the support of the Barrow Kunda Kabilo Youth Association, we are expanding opportunities for girls in Gunjur and beyond.”
Inclusive and Community-Led
While the project initially targeted girls from Barrow Kunda Kabilo who had dropped out of school, it has now expanded to include all young women in the community who wish to acquire skills and pursue entrepreneurship. This inclusive approach reflects a broader commitment to community development and women’s empowerment.
Building on a Strong Foundation
The initiative builds on earlier development successes in Barrow Kunda, such as the installation of a borehole, the provision of agricultural inputs, and the establishment of a local market. These efforts have laid the groundwork for sustainable empowerment initiatives like this one.
The Barrow Kunda Youth Association and the Great Mind’s Skills Centre are calling on local leaders, NGOs, donors, and development partners to support the program’s expansion and sustainability. With additional backing, the project could become a model for grassroots women’s empowerment across The Gambia.
