Environmental activist and journalist Mustapha Manneh is currently in Mombasa, Kenya, where he is taking part in the prestigious Our Ocean Conference, the first edition of the global event to be held on African soil.

The conference has brought together world leaders, environmental experts, researchers, policymakers, and conservation practitioners to discuss solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing the worldโs oceans and marine ecosystems.
Speaking from Mombasa, the Kartong-born environmental advocate described the event as a significant opportunity for Africa to contribute meaningfully to global ocean governance and conservation efforts.
โAn amazing first day of engagement ahead of the highly anticipated Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Kenya, the first to be hosted on African soil. This is a unique opportunity for Africans to help shape stronger and more effective partnerships for the future of our ocean.

Over the coming days, I will be engaging with experts, researchers, and practitioners, and I look forward to sharing key insights and updates here,โ Manneh said.
The conference is expected to focus on key issues including marine conservation, climate change, sustainable fisheries, ocean pollution, and the protection of coastal communities. Participants will also explore innovative approaches and partnerships aimed at safeguarding ocean resources for future generations.
Mustapha Manneh, who has been actively involved in environmental journalism and advocacy, said he is eager to engage with fellow participants and bring valuable lessons and experiences back to communities across The Gambia and the wider region.
The Our Ocean Conference is widely regarded as one of the worldโs leading platforms for advancing commitments and actions to protect the oceans, with this yearโs hosting in Kenya marking a historic milestone for Africaโs role in global environmental leadership.
