Revealed: President Barrow says former VP Tambajang lied about her age

Updated: May 28, 2019

By Sainey Darboe:

Former vice president of The Gambia, Fatoumatta Tambajang, uttered false documents multiple times to meet her needs.

The Gambian constitution was amended to allow former VP Tambajang Jallow to be sworn in as Gambia's Vice President

This disclosure was made by no less than the president of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, in the course of an interview granted to Paradise Television.

Recalling the process of selecting his Vice President, president Barrow recalled:

“The position was first offered to Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, but he came back later and said he didn’t qualify on account of age. Then I offered it to Fatoumatta Tambajang because she was the coalition chair and did a great job on the campaign.

But later on there was a lot of controversy surrounding her appointment based on age. But I stood by her and called on her one day at State House to provide proof of her age with documents. She promised to provide proof of it, but we couldn’t find any verifiable evidence of her age even after paying people at Health department to check her records. Many people from the provinces don’t know their birth dates and circumstances force people to use different ages to serve their interests depending on what they want. That’s what happened”.

Putting more flesh on the bones of the issue which caused substantial public discussion at the time after the then vice president failed to provide evidence as promised, he revealed:

“I was under a lot of pressure at the time. It was very hard for me. But I already appointed her to the position and I had to stand by her. If I removed her at the time it wouldn’t be good for the woman. Later on we changed the law that’s why it took so long for her to be sworn in”.
