Imam Bakawsu: President Jammeh lost power because...

By Sainey Darboe, Editor-in-Chief:

Strident Islamic scholar, Bakawsu Fofana, has ventured that the former president of The Gambia Yahya Jammeh lost power as comeuppance for sanctioning his arrest and torture by the notorious National Intelligence Agency.

He made the declaration while testifying before The Gambia Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Committee yesterday.

Bakawsu said: “He broke my finger, but he felt the pain because it broke his throne and he lost power. I memorized the Qura’n, so if you do anything to me it’s like you did it to the holy Qura’n. I come from a family of big marabouts. I’m a big marabout. When I came back in 2015 I knew it was all over for Jammeh and he couldn’t do anything to me”.

Bakawsu further conceded that Jammeh himself was horrified at news reports of someone burning the Qura’n, but yet failed to comprehend that his memorization of the holy book conferred him with the same right to deferential treatment.

“I was warned by Sukuta Jammeh and Numo Kujabi that if I didn’t stop criticizing the government on the pulpit I would be in the black book and my punishment will be death instead of torture”.
