GCL Volunteers Build Bird Hide at Gunjur’s Bolong Fenyo Reserve

Gunjur, The Gambia – Volunteers from Gunjur Community Link (GCL) Summer Group in collaboration with local NGO GEPADG, have constructed a new bird hide at the Bolong Fenyo Community Wildlife Reserve as part of their ongoing nature conservation initiatives.

The bird hide has been installed beside a pond built earlier this summer by GCL’s first group of volunteers. It provides visitors, birdwatchers, and researchers with a peaceful spot to observe the area’s rich birdlife and other wildlife.

“This is an exciting addition to the reserve and a meaningful way for volunteers to contribute to local conservation efforts,” said a GCL representative. “Everyone has a role to play in protecting and supporting our natural environment.”

Just a short distance from Gunjur Beach, the Bolong Fenyo Reserve is home to a wide range of bird and animal species. It is an important site for biodiversity protection and eco-tourism, playing a key role in sustaining The Gambia’s natural heritage.

This latest initiative highlights GCL’s and GEPADG’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community-driven conservation, showcasing the value of international and local partnerships.

On 9 August, GCL welcomed a team of 21 volunteers from the UK, including 15 students from the Girlguiding South West England division and six leaders, among them two personnel from Venture Force. During their 15-day stay in Gunjur, the volunteers will take part in a series of community projects, including improvement works at the town’s main health centre, where they will help renovate staff quarters.
