As part of their efforts to decentralise football in country, The Gambia Football Federation on Sunday 5th May officially handed over the site for the construction of a mini Stadium to the contractors of the project.
In December 2018, Gunjur Sports Committee and Gambia Football Federation (GFF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of Gunjur Mini Stadium. The Gambia’s football governing body received financial backing from FIFA for the construction of Mini Stadiums in the country of which Gunjur is a beneficiary.
When completed, the mini stadium will have a football field with a grass pitch, pavilions and dressing rooms and will host league as well as international matches at the facility. The project was officially handed over to the contractors to begin the construction of the mini stadium.
On 28th February this year, GFF signed formal contracts with construction and electrical companies for the award of football fields’ development and upgrading of its facilities across the country of which Gunjur mini stadium was one of the projects.
Speaking at the ceremony, First Vice President of the GFF, Mr. Bakary K. Jammeh, who doubles as GFF’s Project Manager said the vision of the current Gambia football leadership is to develop all aspects of football in the country. He said, currently, the country is lagging behind, especially in terms of infrastructure, technical development and capacity building and thus the GFF kept on approaching FIFA culminating in the signing of the contracts to develop new pitches and upgrade others. He urged the people of Gunjur to take ownership of the project to ensure that it serves its intended purpose.
The presentation ceremony at Nyamina Football Park was attended by top officials of the GFF Lang Tombong Tamba, Lamin Kaba Bajo, the MP for Kombo South, Hon. Kebba K Barrow, Gunjur VDC Chairman Tijani Bojang, Ward Councillor Momodou Charreh Jibba, the Alkalo Giki Darboe,distinguished personalities from the community of Gunjur and officials of Gunjur Sports Committee.
