The training focused on collecting critical data on fish catches, including volume, sizes, and the types of fishing gear used at fish landing sites in Gunjur and Sanyang. Participants gained hands-on experience in data collection techniques, which will contribute to improved fisheries management and conservation efforts along The Gambia’s coastal areas.

Beyond data collection, the workshop also emphasised the importance of enhancing regulations on fishing practices to mitigate habitat destruction. Sustainable fishing practices are crucial for preserving marine ecosystems and ensuring long-term benefits for local fishing communities.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, representatives from CETAG and SANYEPD highlighted the significance of the training in promoting responsible fishing and empowering local communities with the knowledge needed to protect their marine resources.

With continued collaboration and training efforts, stakeholders hope to strengthen conservation strategies and support The Gambia’s commitment to sustainable fisheries management.
