The Gunjur Village Development Committee (VDC), in collaboration with the Gunjur Sports Committee (GSC), on Wednesday, 22nd July 2026, hosted a delegation from Sukuta to discuss preparations for the forthcoming North America Sukuta Association (NASUA) 10th Reunion Anniversaryย and reaffirm the longstanding ancestral ties between the two communities.
The visiting delegation, comprising members of the Sukuta Village Development Committee and the Sukuta Sports Committee, explained that NASUA, an association of Sukutarians living in North America, will celebrate its 10th Reunion Anniversary simultaneously with events taking place in Sukuta. As part of the celebrations, Gunjur has been invited to participate as a sister community in recognition of the historic bond shared by the two settlements.
Addressing the meeting, the Sukuta delegation emphasised that the initiative is intended to celebrate and strengthen the unique relationship between the two communities.
โGunjur and Sukuta are one, and we want you to participate in this important celebration,โย the delegation stated.
The celebrations are scheduled to take place from 31st July to 2nd August 2026, with one of the highlights being a โSenewyaaโ Friendly Football Matchย between Gunjur and Sukuta on Sunday.
Welcoming the visitors, the Chairman of the Gunjur Village Development Committee Mr Tijani Bojang expressed appreciation for the initiative and reaffirmed the VDCโs commitment to supporting the event.
The First Vice President of the Gunjur Sports Committee, Fabakary Badjie, also welcomed the proposal and assured the delegation of the committeeโs readiness to participate fully in the friendly match. The Sukuta delegation informed the meeting that it would provide the logistics for the sporting event.
Both sides agreed to establish a joint coordination committee to oversee preparations for the football match and ensure the successful organisation of the event.
Speaking during the meeting, Omar A. Manjang, representing the Gunjur VDC, stressed that the relationship between Gunjur and Sukuta should extend beyond sport. He referred to the book Sociocultural History of Sukutaย by Mama K., noting that it documents the historical and ancestral relationship between the two communities and explains how their enduring brotherhood was established.
He encouraged both communities to organise more joint cultural, educational and development initiatives to preserve and strengthen their shared heritage.
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to establish a broader joint committee to advance cooperation between Gunjur and Sukuta. They also resolved to utilise their respective community online television platforms to jointly promote the anniversary celebrations and future collaborative programmes aimed at deepening the historic ties between the two communities.
