A delegation from Gunjur on Thursday met with Brikama Area Council (BAC) Chairman Yankuba Darboe to discuss growing environmental and public health concerns arising from the uncontrolled disposal and accumulation of waste at the communityโs dumping site.
The delegation comprised Fasaikou Darboe, Bajay Bojang of the Council of Elders, Lamin Bojang, Buba Janneh, Lamin โNenehnuwoโ Touray, and Faburama Darboe.

The meeting focused on finding immediate and long-term solutions to address the deteriorating condition of the site, which has become a source of concern for residents.
According to feedback from the meeting, a BAC official responsible for waste management and disposal is scheduled to visit the dumping site on Monday to assess the situation on the ground. The assessment will be followed by the clearing and removal of waste from the site, expected to take place on Tuesday or Wednesday.
As part of broader efforts to improve waste management and regulate activities at the site, BAC officials will also engage the Gunjur Village Development Committee (VDC) in discussions aimed at establishing a sustainable management framework.
Under the proposed arrangement, the VDC would oversee the day-to-day management of the dumping site, with a dedicated employee stationed at the site to collect fees from users disposing of waste. Revenue generated from the site would be used primarily to cover staff salaries, while the remaining funds would be shared between the VDC and the Brikama Area Council.
The initiative is expected to strengthen waste management practices in Gunjur, improve environmental sanitation, and address longstanding concerns about the health and environmental impacts of uncontrolled waste disposal in the community.
Residents have welcomed the engagement and expressed hope that the commitments made during the meeting will result in swift action to restore proper waste management at the site.
