It is with deep concern and sorrow that we report an unfortunate incident affecting one of our hardworking young farmers, Mr. Alieu Janneh, whose garden was recently targeted by thieves. The perpetrators made away with his power tiller at a time when it was most needed, dealing a significant blow to his farming activities.

This shocking development has sparked concern within the community, as many continue to rally in solidarity with Mr. Janneh and other young farmers facing similar challenges.
On Wednesday, 18th March, as programme director of BE REEL Gambia, I visited Mr. Jannehโs farm, where I engaged him in a brief discussion about the incident and his journey in agriculture. Mr. Janneh, who transitioned from full-time employment into farming, has been making remarkable strides. Through the application of smart farming techniques, he is helping to revive the agricultural sector while inspiring many young people to consider farming as a viable and rewarding livelihood.
However, this progress is now threatened by a worrying rise in petty theft cases across communities. Such incidents not only discourage hardworking individuals but also undermine efforts to boost local food production and economic resilience.

Community members are being urged to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard their properties, farms, and business premises. While it may be difficult to completely prevent such acts, there are practical steps that can help mitigate risks.
One key option highlighted is business insurance - an area that remains relatively underutilised and poorly understood locally. Insurance coverage can provide protection against losses resulting from theft, burglary, and fire, offering farmers and entrepreneurs a safety net in times of crisis.
As the community stands firmly with Mr. Janneh, this incident serves as a reminder of the need for collective responsibility in protecting livelihoods and supporting those who are working tirelessly to build a better future through agriculture.
