Gunjur has recorded its first sea turtle nest of the 2026 nesting season, marking the official start of another important period for marine conservation along the Gunjur coastline.
The nest, laid by a Green Turtle, was discovered during a routine patrol by members of the Gunjur Conservationists and Eco-Tourism Association (CETAG) on Thursday, 23 July. Following the discovery, the nesting site was secured and is now under close monitoring to help ensure the successful incubation and hatching of the eggs.
The early discovery is an encouraging sign for conservationists and reinforces Gunjurโs reputation as one of The Gambiaโs most important nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles. Through years of dedicated conservation work, the Gunjur Conservationists and Eco-Tourism Association (CETAG), together with volunteers, community members and conservation partners, has played a vital role in protecting nesting turtles, safeguarding their habitat and raising public awareness about the importance of marine conservation.
Members of the public and visitors are encouraged to support these efforts by keeping a safe distance from marked nesting sites, keeping the beach clean, avoiding the use of bright lights at night, and reporting any sea turtle sightings or fresh tracks to the monitoring team by calling 333 8666 or 390 5096.
With the nesting season now underway, conservationists remain hopeful that many more sea turtles will return to Gunjur Beach in the coming months, continuing a natural cycle that has made the community one of The Gambiaโs leading centres for sea turtle conservation.
