In a strong demonstration of leadership and commitment to improving environmental sanitation, Brikama Area Council (BAC) Chairman Yankuba Darboe joined council workers and members of the Gunjur Village Development Committee (VDC) in a major clean-up exercise at the Gunjur dumpsite.

The exercise focused on clearing the large volume of accumulated waste from the site and transporting it to Tambana for proper disposal. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to address the longstanding challenges surrounding waste collection and management in Gunjur.

BAC has committed plans to recruit a Waste Manager to oversee the operations of the dumpsite and ensure the site is properly managed. The dumpsite, which was acquired by the people of Gunjur through the Gunjur Development Fund (GDF) and the VDC, was intended to serve as a designated waste collection and disposal point for the community.

However, due to the absence of active management, residents had been indiscriminately dumping waste both inside and around the fenced facility. The situation drew widespread concern from environmental advocates and community members, who warned that the uncontrolled dumping posed serious health and environmental risks, particularly for residents living close to the site.

The clean-up exercise marks a significant step towards restoring order at the dumpsite and addressing the concerns that have been repeatedly raised by the community.

Gunjur Online commends Brikama Area Council and the Gunjur VDC for taking the matter seriously and translating their commitments into action. Sustaining these efforts through effective management and community cooperation will be key to maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment for all.
