Bouworde vzw Volunteers from Belgium Experience Authentic Gambian Hospitality and Traditional Cuisine in Saho Kunda.

Bouworde vzw volunteers from Belgium currently at Gunjur Project have enjoyed an authentic cultural experience after spending a day with the Saho family in Saho Kunda in Gunjur, where they learned to prepare and cook a variety of traditional Gambian dishes.

The visit formed part of the organisation’s ongoing volunteer programme, which combines community development with cultural exchange, allowing international volunteers to experience everyday life and traditions in Gunjur.

Welcomed into the Saho family home, the volunteers joined family members in preparing local dishes, sharing recipes, learning new cooking skills and enjoying an afternoon of laughter and friendship.

Reflecting on the experience, The Gunjur Project said:

“There’s something special about sharing food together. Our volunteers were warmly welcomed into the Saho family home, where they spent the day preparing and cooking traditional Gambian dishes together. It was an opportunity to share recipes, learn new skills, laugh together and create friendships.”

The organisation expressed sincere appreciation to the Saho family for their generous hospitality and for sharing treasured family recipes, describing the experience as a memorable highlight of the volunteers’ stay in Gunjur.

Beyond the cultural activities, the volunteers have continued contributing to community development projects at Sheikh Hatab Memorial Nursery School. The team has been helping to brighten the school’s exterior walls, adding another finishing touch to the major refurbishment completed earlier this year.

The earlier phase of the project included the renovation of classrooms and the replacement of the school’s roof, significantly improving the learning environment for pupils.

Work is also progressing on the next phase of the school’s development. The Gunjur Project has announced that another volunteer team will return next month to construct a brand-new school kitchen. Preparatory work, including the laying of blocks, has already begun ahead of construction.

The organisation noted that each volunteer visit leaves a lasting legacy through shared experiences, stronger community partnerships and sustainable development projects that benefit the people of Gunjur.

The Gunjur Project has remained a longstanding development partner in Gunjur, supporting initiatives in education, healthcare and community infrastructure while promoting cultural understanding between the local community and volunteers from around the world.
