A heavy downpour on Tuesday drenched Gunjur and many parts of The Gambia, bringing temporary relief from the heat but also causing widespread disruption, including erratic electricity supply and power outages in several communities.

While Gunjur experienced significant rainfall, there were no reports of severe flooding in the coastal settlement. However, the situation was markedly different in Brikama and several communities across the Kombos, where the intense rainfall triggered flash flooding, leaving roads submerged and disrupting the movement of motorists and pedestrians.

The heavy rain also affected electricity supply, with communities in many parts of the country experiencing erratic power supply and prolonged blackouts during and after the storm. The interruptions caused inconvenience to households and businesses, with only a few relying on alternative power sources while waiting for normal service to be restored.

Photos and videos shared on social media showed floodwaters inundating streets in some of the affected areas, with vehicles struggling to navigate waterlogged roads.

As the rainy season gathers pace, communities are calling for improved drainage infrastructure in flood-prone communities and a more resilient electricity network capable of withstanding severe weather conditions.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall, avoid flooded roads where possible, and follow safety advice issued by the relevant authorities.

With more rain expected in the coming weeks and months, communities across The Gambia are encouraged to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to protect lives and property.
