Following an ultimatum from the Alikalo of Gunjur, Alhagie Giki Darboe, and the council of elders, the much protracted and anticipated Annual General Meeting of the Village Development Commitree (VDC) is to be held on Sunday, 17th September at the community centre in Gunjur.
The announcement follows a meeting that was summoned on the 3rd of September 2017 at ALIKALI's residence which was attended by the current chairman of the VDC with some of his members, some members of council of elders, and members of the sub committee to the VDC. The meeting agreed to a final arrangement to conduct an AGM as well as prepare for the handing over of the affairs of the VDC to a new incoming VDC.
According to our source who attended the meeting, the VDC chairman was quizzed as to why an AGM was not conducted in four years. The chairman indicated that due to their busy schedules, they have not been able to conduct an AGM as stipulated in the constitution. The VDC chairman further indicated that he was ready to handover the mantle of leadership of the VDC, but due to the fact that an AGM has not taken place, he was unable to handover.
It could be recalled that an AGM was scheduled by the VDC in July which was subsequently cancelled due to claims that the beach sub-committee could not produce their activity and financial report in time to be presented at the AGM. The AGM was postponed until such a time the beach sub-Committee could prepare their report.
As a result of this, some concerned people in Gunjur and some members of the VDC insisted that given the fact that the term of office of the current VDC has expired, an AGM must be conducted to select new members whether or not the report of the beach sub-committee is ready.
It is therefore a welcomed news that the much anticipated AGM will take place on Sunday, 17th September and the current VDC will handover to a new VDC accordingly.
