𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞: 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐚𝐢 𝐁𝐨𝐣𝐚𝐧𝐠 – 𝐀 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲

Few individuals leave behind a legacy that spans education, national development, humanitarian service and community empowerment. Mr. Bai Bojang was one such remarkable son of Gunjur whose lifelong commitment to serving humanity earned him respect both in The Gambia and across the international community.

Born and raised in Gunjur, Bai Bojang began his career as a teacher in the early 1970s, serving in several regions of The Gambia. Through education, he helped shape young minds and contributed to the country’s human capital development at a time when the nation was laying the foundations of its post-independence growth.

His passion for improving people’s lives later led him into community development, where he rose through the ranks to become Director of Community Development in The Gambia. During his tenure, he championed programmes that transformed rural communities through grassroots participation, self-help initiatives and economic empowerment.

Among his most enduring contributions was his role in initiating the establishment of the 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐎) and promoting the formation of 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐬 (𝐕𝐃𝐂𝐬) across the country. These institutions have remained central to community participation and local development, empowering villages to identify and address their own development priorities.

Mr. Bojang’s dedication and leadership eventually earned him a distinguished career with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), where he served as a senior staff member in several West and East African countries until his retirement around a decade ago.

His humanitarian work extended beyond Africa, taking him to conflict-affected countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he worked alongside international partners to fight hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity among some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Throughout his international career, he also served in Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Zambia and Kenya, making significant contributions to humanitarian assistance, emergency response and sustainable development.

Despite his impressive international career, uncle Bai Bojang remained deeply connected to his roots. He was a passionate farmer who believed in the dignity of honest labour, self-reliance and leading by example. Those who knew him describe him as a humble, principled and compassionate man whose life reflected integrity, courage and an unwavering commitment to public service.

His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter, but his legacy lives on through the communities he helped empower, the institutions he helped build, the lives he touched through education and humanitarian work, and the generations inspired by his example.

Uncle Mr. Bai Bojang is survived by five children.
