Journalist Momodou Justice Darboe was on Wednesday arrested at the premises of the Kanifing Magistratesโ€™ Court while reportedly attempting to take photographs of an accused person and spectators at the court.

According to information shared by Pa Ousman Darboe, the arrest order was issued by Commissioner Sanneh. Darboe was handcuffed at around 12:00 noon and remained in custody until approximately 1:00 p.m. Gambian time.

He was later transported to the headquarters of the The Gambia Police Force in Banjul, where he is currently being detained.

As of the time of reporting, no formal charges have been filed against the journalist.

The development has raised concerns among media practitioners and advocates of press freedom, with calls being made for the authorities to release him unconditionally and ensure the protection of journalistsโ€™ rights in The Gambia.
