Lawyer Darboe is a gentleman who actually believes in Democracy - Momodou Sabally

"Lawyer Darboe is a Gentleman who Actually Believes in Democracy", That’s according to former Secretary General and Head of Civil Service Momodou Sabally.

Firebrand author and social commentator Momodou Sabally has stated that Gambia's Foreign Minister and Head of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, is a gentleman who actually believes in the principles of democracy and human rights just as he preaches it.

Sabally, who is also erstwhile Presidential Affairs Minister under former President Yahya Jammeh, made the above remarks Tuesday evening during his appearance as guest on the popular "News Review" Programme at the Fatou Network. Prompted by remarks from the anchor of the programme Fatou Camara who made similar observations, Sabally opined that unlike other politicians who like to pontificate about principles they do not practice, Lawyer Darboe actually believes in, and practices, the principle of democracy that he so passionately talks about. However when the anchor suggested that he is now a member of the UDP, Sabally clarified that he is not a member of the UDP or any other political party even though he admitted that he openly campaigned for a UDP parliamentary candidate (Saikouba Jarju of Busumbala Constituency) during the 2017 National Assembly Election and also two candidates of the same part during the elections for Ward Councillors in 2018. He admitted that most of his family members are UDP supporters and that personally he has a lot of respect and love for the UDP's party leader. Speaking about the main subject of the talk show yesterday, Sabally condemned the Faraba Banta incident which he described as "sad, tragic and completely unacceptable" calling on President Adama Barrow to urgently look into the facts of the fracas that led to loss of lives and to take appropriate action immediately. He further called on the business community to be careful about their dealings with communities and for everyone to know that the peace and stability of The Gambia is our collective responsibility and that therefore all hands should be on the deck in trying to resolving the unfortunate incident that happened in Faraba Banta.
