Press Release - Formal Human Rights Complaint Against the Gambia Govt & CRC

Sunday 15th December 2019

PRESS RELEASE

Formal Human Rights Complaint Against The Gambia Govt. & Constitutional Review Commission

Following the publication of the draft Constitution by theConstitutional Review Commission (CRC) the DWG, having reviewed it uncovered serious human rights concerns, serious enough to warrant us to raise suchconcerns with the CRC. We constructively and appropriately reminded the CRC of its obligations under ss.25 and 33 of the Constitution, Articles 7 and 18 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (and Articles 18 and 26 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights). Unfortunately and, to our amazement and disappointment the CRC failed to engage with us on such a serious and fundamental subject.

In light of the above, we were left with no alternative but to take further steps in a bid to compel both the Government of the Republic of The Gambia (GoTG) and the CRC to comply with the law and their legal obligations under international law with respect to human rights.

Accordingly, we would like to inform the general public that we on Thursday 12th December 2019 submitted a formal complaint to the National Human Rights Commission against the GoTG and the CRC for breach(es) of human rights. An appropriate summary of this formal complaint may be made available on our website, Twitter and Facebook page when appropriate.
