Murder in Gunjur, as land dispute festers
By Sainey Darboe
Communal clashes between Gunjur and Berending over land issues has resulted in the death of one Buba Jammeh of Gunjur. The victim, commonly known as 'Tong Mailo' is reported to have been shot with a gun by assailants from Berending. His dead body is said to be currently lodged at Gunjur Health Center and tensions are reportedly high between the two communities as we go to press. There is reported chaos at the Gunjur Police Station where residents from both communities are present.
Witnesses also reported shots were aimed at legs of other victims who sustained injuries.
According to Nabani Darboe, the deceased was shot by one Buba Drammeh who had made earlier threats against the people of Gunjur and was embroiled in multiple legal cases over land.
Nabani then leveled allegations of negligence against the police for not nabbing the alleged shooter despite the issuance of a bench warrant against him and reports of sightings to them.
The Gunjur/Berending land disputes goes back decades and as recent as last month, there had been violent clashes between clans from Gunjur and Berending over the said land disputes.
This is a developing story.
