Gunjur Development Association (GDA) ,has embarked on a massive fundraising activity to raise funds for the construction of a state of the earth multi -purpose centre in the coastal settlement of Gunjur in the southern region of The Gambia. Explaining the rationale and background to the fundraising venture which includes a Gofundme account, Mori Kebba Jammeh the USA based Treasurer of the Gunjur Development Association (GDA) enunciates : “ This platform has been setup to facilitate the funding of a multi-purpose centre in Gunjur. The current facility has been built many years ago and lacks some of today's technological infrastructure that are important for societal development. We feel that our younger generation deserves better structures and facilities that can help to augment their classroom activities and skills. The facility when completed will have computers, meeting or conference areas, indoor sports and other amenities that will help facilitate learning for our young ones. We welcome donations and seek partners who can contribute towards this project to help us realise a brighter future for current and future generations of our community.” To augment and diversify the fundraising activity, Gunjurians and well wishers in Gunjur and abroad have been tasked to make the following monthly financial contributions: 1. Those based in The Gambia - D100 a month 2. Those based in diaspora - D1000 a month The fundraising drive which started in earnest has already seen some members of the Gunjur diaspora pay D12,000 towards the project. This medium has also learnt that an anonymous contributor has pledged one hundred bags of cement towards the construction on the much needed multi-purpose centre in Gunjur. Asked about the importance of this project, the head of GDA in the diaspora Ousman Manjang had this to say: “The multi-purpose Center construction will signify the unity amongst the people of Gunjur as the entire community comes together to raise funds for the construction of the Center. Also, the multi-purpose Center will serve our community as a mentoring, training and skills learning center not only for our Community, but could also serve as a national symbol for Gambian youths and women as a modern skills learning Center. “ This project comes hard on the heels of the Gunjur Health Centre renovation project where GDA in collaboration with Kombo Sillah Association spent in excess of D250,000. The project encompassed the complete overhaul of the water supply system, renovation of the maternity ward and complete makeover of the entire building of the health centre.
