Gunjur community embarks on beach cleaning, as environmental devastation festers

Dozens of youths from the community of Gunjur and environs yesterday converged on the beach as part of a cleaning exercise, amid concern about disposal of toxic waste into the sea by the Chinese company Golden Lead. The beach cleaning exercise coincided with the Africa Liberation Day celebrations of 25th May. 


 
The beach cleaning event saw environmental and rights activits meeting at Gunjur Beach to clean the area as a mark of solidarity to the Gunjur youths fighting for a clean and healthy environment.
 

 
AfricaRising members, a Gambia based continent-wide movement aimed at promoting Pan-Africanism at grassroots level were in attendance at the beach to show solidarity with environmental activists in Gunjur.
 

 
The Gunjur Beach cleaning exercise, dubbed: “our environment matters, show me the beach” precede a radio program at the local FM station, Janneh Koto FM on Thursday aimed at sensitising the community on the importance of safeguarding the environment as part of celebrating the Africa Liberation Day.
 

 
Commenting on the exercise, environmental activist Lamin Mbakau Jammeh said:”Is this not enough for Government to know that the environmentalists are so much concerned about their environment. The concern citizens of Gunjur today went to the beach to tidy up the place”.
